Background and objectives of the funding

Ruhr-Universität Bochum has published an action plan to strengthen democracy and diversity. Its development was prompted by repeated politically motivated break-ins, graffiti, vandalism and intimidation attempts against university institutions that are committed to equality, anti-discrimination and queer and feminist issues. These incidents make it clear that democratic values, academic freedom and a diverse university culture cannot be taken for granted, but must be actively protected and strengthened.

Against this background, funds will be made available once in the summer semester 2026 to promote activities in this area. The aim is to strengthen democratic discourse on campus, create spaces for exchange and reflection and make commitment to an open and pluralistic university culture visible.

Funding of up to 1,000 euros is available for activities by all members of the university.

The funds can only be used for material resources. For example for

• Lectures and discussion events
• Workshops (including any fee costs incurred)
• Public relations work (e.g. printing costs for flyers, posters, information materials)

Hospitality and representation costs as well as student and research assistants are not eligible for funding.

There are no application deadlines; applications can be submitted at any time. As the total amount of funding is limited, it is advisable to apply early.

If necessary, an additional page with graphics, tables, etc. can be attached to the application form for further explanation. Additional attachment pages are only possible in justified cases.
