Ruhr University Bochum promotes in particular
RUB focuses on research-based learning and special practical relevance in order to enable students to deal with major social issues. It invests heavily in making its teaching fit for the future.
University programs, including infrastructure programs: Over 1 million euros annually
Digital teaching ideas (5x5000): 50,000 euros per year
Student initiative projects: 40,000 euros per year
Other innovation projects are also receiving targeted support.
With its university programs, RUB continuously promotes innovative teaching projects in all faculties. Hundreds have been implemented in recent years. The focus is on research-oriented formats that actively involve students in scientific projects, the further development of digital teaching and learning opportunities and the close integration of theory and practice.
This also includes the targeted expansion of the learning infrastructure on campus. Funding decisions are made jointly: Students are closely involved in the decision-making committees and even bear full responsibility for individual programs – RUB provides the funds.
The 5x5000 competition strengthens student participation in shaping teaching: Digital teaching ideas are developed in teams with lecturers and a student jury decides on their implementation.
In addition, student initiative projects enable students to design their own formats and implement them in a practical way – in this way, students visibly help to shape teaching at RUB.
Interdisciplinary summer schools are also specifically supported.
Erasmus Mundus funding: almost 18 million euros in the past 10 years
Teaching scholarships: 2 million euros in the years 2024 to 2028
The international orientation of teaching is strengthened by European programs that promote excellent courses and global networking.

Ruhr University Bochum invests in the qualification of prospective teachers and supports the commitment to good education.
RUB is particularly visible in the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into university teaching: It advises politicians and universities on the ethical and data protection-compliant use of learning analytics and AI, tests AI-supported tools to improve digital formats and bundles the professional exchange with its own specialist conference on AI and learning analytics in higher education.
This creates future-proof teaching and learning formats that combine quality, practical relevance and social relevance.
