Together we are shaping the world of tomorrow: Diversity, inclusion and sustainability characterize our teaching. As Germany's largest campus university, we promote interdisciplinary collaboration and research-oriented learning. We work closely with our neighbors in the University Alliance Ruhr.
“Built to change” is the motto of Ruhr University Bochum – also in teaching. Built to shape change, we were the first university in the Ruhr are to support a particularly large number of first degree graduates.
We are proud that people from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds continue to study successfully at our university. A respectful dialog in and outside of courses and an active commitment to and implementation of inclusion, equal opportunities and integration in teaching allow us to deal constructively with disadvantages, barriers and different lifestyles and ensure that this diversity becomes a real strength.
In times of increasing social tensions, we see ourselves as a provider of opportunities and a driver of integration for a resilient democratic society. This is reflected not only in our teaching content, but we also design teaching and studies as a partnership process in which students acquire skills for the future in exchange with teachers and peers. In awareness of the university's responsibility for securing the future, education for sustainable development, digitalization, diversity and democracy have a firm place in our curricula. Against the backdrop of current challenges in the Ruhr area, in Germany and worldwide, we prepare our graduates for the demands of a dynamic academic environment and labor market as well as for active participation in society.
As the largest campus university in Germany, interdisciplinary collaboration is much easier for students and teaching staff than at other study locations thanks to short distances. Our close proximity and strong sense of community enable us to take a holistic approach to complex problems, find sustainable solutions, and actively promote innovative developments through concrete teaching projects. In addition to the guiding principle of research-oriented learning, which prepares students to shape the future through science, challenge-based learning as a practice-oriented form of research-oriented learning integrates challenges posed by non-university partners, particularly those from the regional community, but also through international collaboration. In this way, teaching also reinforces RUB’s role as a responsible actor and catalyst for transformation in the city and the region.
Together with our partners in the UA Ruhr, we offer a coordinated and resilient range of courses in a wide range of subjects, thus offering students a reliably high quality of study and teaching. Through our involvement in the European University Alliance European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition (UNIC), we have reliable partners throughout Europe to help shape the world of tomorrow through research and transformation-oriented learning based on science and democratic values.
