To the registration

On the occasion of RUB Diversity Day 2024, which focuses on the topic of "Disability, illness, neurodiversity - challenges in everyday university life", the University Library and the Inclusive University project have invited the freelance journalist and author Andrea Schöne. She will read from her book "Behinderung und Ableismus" ["Disability and Ableism"] and is intended to stimulate a discussion about achievement and ableism in higher education:

Die Berechtigung, Bildung zu erwerben und auf dem ersten Arbeitsmarkt zu arbeiten, wird [...] bei Nichtbehinderten überwiegend nicht in Frage gestellt. [The entitlement to acquire education and to work in the primary labor market is [...] predominantly not questioned among non-disabled people.]

Schöne, Andrea: Behinderung und Ableismus. Münster 2022, S. 78.

Mental stress in higher education is increasing due to multiple crises - studies worldwide confirm this. At the same time, higher education has always had a ableist character that creates a power imbalance between students and lecturers. We will talk about the roots and effects of ableism in higher education and discuss what a new concept of performance could look like that would provide mental relief and break down power imbalances.

The event will be held in German.
